6/10/2023 0 Comments Diagnosis by lisa sandersSanders’s narratives center around the process of making a diagnosis. The result was a monthly column for the magazine, “Diagnosis.” The column evolved into several books, the most recent of which, “ Diagnosis: Solving the Most Baffling Medical Mysteries,” has inspired a Netflix documentary series. A few years into her medical training, she was approached by a writer at The New York Times Magazine who asked her, “What can doctors write?” Sanders replied that doctors collect stories every single day about the patients they treat and that perhaps she could translate some of those stories into print. Sanders, an internist at the Yale University School of Medicine, spent a decade working in journalism before becoming a physician. Diagnosis is a process, one that Sanders advocates should include the patient. Patients usually have a sense of what’s ailing them they may have an idea of what their illness is or have some insight into its cause. That’s a question Lisa Sanders thinks doctors should be asking their patients more often.

They have developed a hybrid identity that they use as a shield to fight against the dominating patriarchy of their household. However, the second-generation Indian-American women are independent. They desperately try to hold on to their previous identity but are in a constant dilemma as their husbands, representation of the patriarchy, try to mould them into someone new. In this essay, I argue that the first-generation women immigrants feel completely lost in the new land, confined to their homes and patriarchal rules. In this essay, I will discuss the female voice of this hybrid identity created by Lahiri in two of the stories that have central female characters – “Mrs. This constant state of flux creates fluidity in the identity of these people who feel uprooted.įurther, the female characters in Lahiri’s stories assume a subaltern voice, often been dismissed by the patriarchal postcolonial literature (Möller 2008). Though the other three stories are set in India, they also deal with Indian Americans returning to India and facing a problem to adjust to the Indian conditions. In Maladies, six out of nine stories are about Indians based in the USA and the crisis that their identity is due to their sense of belonging to their native land even though they reside in America. The craving for an imaginative homeland that one has left and on returning, their inexorable inability to adjust to their native land creates a vacuum in these characters leading to an identity crisis. 6/10/2023 0 Comments Once were warriors novelThen I will compare the characters of Beth Heke from the novel "Once were Warriors" and Te Paania from the novel "Baby Noeyes". In the next chapters I want to give a short introduction to the social status of Maori women in New Zealand before the colonization and after the English settlers arrived. The main characters Te Paania and Beth Heke seem to be very different at the beginning, but both represent the ideal of a Maori women, being a leader and a warrior. The main struggles with effects of colonialism and imperialism after the English settlers arrived are topics in both books. Both novels deal with resistance and social change and we can find representations of strong Maori having a positive influence on their family and their environment. The title of the book is "Baby Noeyes" and it was first published in 1998. The other book I will focus on is written by the famous author Patricia Grace, who is known for creating stories with powerful women characters. One book is the highly controversial and bestselling novel of Alan Duff "Once Were Warriors", which was first published in 1990 and later turned into a movie adaption by Lee Tamahori.
